Pets and flowers do not always mix. Cats and dogs like to chew, sniff and knock things over, and some flowers are dangerous for them. This guide gives general information on which flowers are usually considered safer, and which to avoid. It is not veterinary advice, so always check with your vet if you are worried.

Flowers generally considered pet-friendly

Roses: generally non-toxic, but remove thorns. See roses.
Sunflowers: generally non-toxic. See sunflowers.

Flowers to avoid with pets

Lilies: highly toxic to cats. Read lilies and cat safety.
Tulips and daffodils: the bulbs are especially harmful.
Hyacinths: can cause stomach upset.
Carnations and chrysanthemums: can cause mild problems if eaten.

Check mixed bouquets

Mixed bouquets may include a few stems of an unsafe flower. Look closely at what is in the arrangement, and if you have a cat, avoid any bouquet that contains lilies.

Practical tips

Put the vase out of reach, on a high shelf.
Pick up fallen petals and leaves quickly.
Keep the water covered or out of reach, especially with lilies.
Do not let pets chew stems or plants.

If your pet eats a flower

Contact a vet immediately, tell them which plant your pet ate and follow their instructions. Do not wait for symptoms to appear, especially with lilies and cats.

Sending flowers to a pet owner
