A well-chosen centrepiece can turn a simple dinner into an occasion. The best table flowers set the mood, look good from every seat and never get in the way of conversation. Here is how to choose them.

Keep it low

The most important rule is height. A tall arrangement blocks sightlines, so keep the flowers low, roughly below eye level when guests are seated. If you love tall flowers, place them on a sideboard instead.

Think about scent
