Easter Flowers and Traditions in Germany

Easter, or Ostern, is one of the most colourful times of the year in Germany. Spring is arriving, gardens start to bloom and homes fill with fresh flowers and decorations. This guide covers Easter flowers and some of the customs behind them.

The Osterstrauss

One of the best-known German Easter traditions is the Osterstrauß or Osterstrauch: branches such as forsythia or pussy willow placed in a vase and decorated with painted eggs. It brings the outdoors inside and marks the arrival of spring.

Spring flowers for Easter

• Daffodils: called Osterglocken (Easter bells) in German, they are the flower most closely linked with the holiday.
