Graduation Flowers and Gifts: Celebrating Abitur and University
Celebrating the Abitur, a vocational qualification or a university degree? Discover graduation flowers, gift ideas and card messages for Germany.

Finishing school, an apprenticeship or a degree is a big moment, and it deserves to be celebrated. In Germany the best-known milestone is the Abitur, but vocational qualifications and university degrees are just as worth marking. Flowers are a classic way to say "well done", and they are easy to combine with a gift for the next chapter.
- Best flowers: sunflowers, orange and yellow roses, bright mixed bouquets.
- At the ceremony: a compact hand bouquet that is easy to carry.
- Can't attend? Send flowers to the graduate's home.
- Card: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Abschluss!
Graduation moments in Germany
- Abitur: the final secondary school exam. Students celebrate with the Abiball, a formal evening with families and teachers.
- Mittlere Reife and other school leaving certificates: just as much of an achievement, and often the start of an apprenticeship.
- Completed apprenticeship (Ausbildung): the journeyman's or final exam marks the start of a career.
- University degrees: bachelor's, master's and doctorates. Many faculties now hold an Abschlussfeier.
Which flowers say "well done"
Graduation flowers should feel energetic and proud. Good choices:
- Sunflowers: optimism and warmth. See sunflowers.
- Orange roses: enthusiasm and admiration. See orange roses and our rose colour guide.
- Yellow roses: joy and friendship. See yellow roses.
- Bright mixed bouquets: browse our graduation collection and congratulations flowers.
School colours or the colours of a university are a lovely personal touch if you know them.
Bring them or send them?
At the ceremony or the Abiball, a compact hand bouquet is best. The graduate will be shaking hands, posing for photos and dancing, so a large arrangement quickly becomes a burden. If you cannot attend, or the celebration is in another city, sending flowers to the graduate's home is just as meaningful, and they will arrive somewhere with a vase.
Gifts to go with the flowers
- Something to celebrate with: a cake or a wine gift basket. See cakes and wine gift baskets.
- Something for the next step: a plant for a first flat, or a gourmet hamper to stock the kitchen. See pot plants and gourmet hampers.
- Money: very common in Germany for graduations, often tucked into a card. Flowers make the gesture feel more personal.
Card messages

- Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Abschluss! Congratulations on your graduation!
