What to Write on a Flower Card: Messages in English and German

You have chosen the flowers, and now there is a small empty card waiting for you. For many people, this is the hardest part. The good news: a flower card does not need to be clever or long. It needs to sound like you. Below are ready-to-use messages for every occasion, in English and German, plus a few simple rules.

At a glance
  • Length: one to three short sentences.
  • Formula: greeting + one personal detail + your name.
  • du or Sie: du for friends and family, Sie for business and formal contacts.
  • Language: English is fine; one German phrase is a nice touch.

A simple formula that always works

  1. The occasion: "Happy birthday" or "Congratulations".
  2. One personal detail: a memory, a hope or a reason you are thinking of them.
  3. Your sign-off: "Love", "Best wishes" or simply your name.

Example: Happy birthday, Anna! I still laugh about our trip to Hamburg. Love, Tom.

Birthday messages

  • Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Happy birthday!
  • Ich wünsche dir einen wunderschönen Tag. I wish you a wonderful day.
  • Auf ein fantastisches neues Lebensjahr! Here's to a fantastic new year of life!

Remember: in Germany, birthday wishes should never arrive early. See German birthday etiquette.

Love and romance

  • Ich liebe dich. I love you.
  • Für dich, einfach so. For you, just because.
  • Du machst jeden Tag schöner. You make every day more beautiful.

Thank you

  • Vielen Dank für alles! Thank you for everything!
  • Herzlichen Dank für deine Hilfe. Heartfelt thanks for your help.
  • Danke, dass es dich gibt. Thank you for being you.

Congratulations

  • Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Congratulations!
  • Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Abschluss / zur Hochzeit / zur Geburt. Congratulations on your graduation / wedding / the birth.
  • Wir sind so stolz auf dich. We are so proud of you.

Get well soon

  • Gute Besserung! Get well soon!
  • Ich denke an dich. I am thinking of you.
  • Werde schnell wieder gesund! Get healthy again soon!

Sorry

  • Es tut mir leid. I am sorry.
  • Können wir reden? Can we talk?

Sympathy and condolences

Keep it short. Nobody expects the perfect words at a time like this.

  • Mein aufrichtiges Beileid. My sincere condolences.
  • In stillem Gedenken. In quiet remembrance.
  • Wir sind in Gedanken bei euch. Our thoughts are with you.

Business and colleagues

Use Sie unless you already say du to each other.

  • Herzlichen Dank für die gute Zusammenarbeit. Thank you for the good cooperation.
  • Viel Erfolg im neuen Job! Lots of success in your new job!
  • Herzlichen Glückwunsch zur Eröffnung! Congratulations on the opening!

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing too much. The card is small; one good sentence beats five general ones.
  • Forgetting your name. It happens more often than you think.
  • Jokes that need context. The recipient may read the card in front of others.

Frequently Asked Questions

One to three short sentences is ideal. A card is small, and a short, personal message is more memorable than a long one.

Only if the recipient prefers German or you want to add a personal touch. A warm message in English is always fine.

Use du for friends, family and partners. Use Sie for business contacts, teachers and people you address formally.

List the names, or use a group name such as Dein Team (your team) or Familie Müller.

Keep it short and sincere, for example Mein aufrichtiges Beileid (my sincere condolences) or In stillem Gedenken (in quiet remembrance).

You can leave the card unsigned, but think about the recipient. An anonymous bouquet can be confusing, especially from a stranger.
