Sympathy and Funeral Flowers in Germany: A Respectful Guide

Choosing flowers after someone has died is never easy. In Germany there are well-established customs, and knowing them helps you show respect without worry. This guide explains the basics of sympathy and funeral flowers.

Read the death notice first

The notice (Traueranzeige) often tells you what the family would like. If it says Spenden statt Blumen or Anstelle von Blumen bitten wir um eine Spende, the family prefers donations, and it is kind to follow that wish. If it does not say anything, flowers are usually welcome.

Types of funeral flowers

• Wreath (Kranz): a large, traditional tribute placed at the funeral or grave.
• Arrangement (Gesteck): a compact design for the ceremony hall or grave.
• Bouquet (Trauerstrauß): a simpler tribute that can be given to the family or placed at the grave.

Colours and flowers

White is the safest choice, and soft pastels or deeper tones can also be appropriate. White roses and calla lilies are common. You can also send flowers to the family after the funeral. Many people find the weeks that follow the hardest, and a bouquet shows that you are still thinking of them.
