When to give gerberas

How to care for gerberas

Gerberas have soft, hairy stems that are easily blocked by bacteria. A few small habits make a big difference:

  1. Clean vase: wash it with hot, soapy water first.
  2. Shallow water: only 5 to 10 cm of water. Deep water softens the stems.
  3. Fresh cut: trim 2 to 3 cm off each stem at an angle with a sharp knife.
  4. Flower food: add the sachet that came with the bouquet.
  5. Change the water: every two days, recutting the stems each time.
  6. Cool spot: away from heaters, direct sun and the fruit bowl.
Drooping heads? Recut the stems, put them in fresh shallow water and give them a tall vase for support. Many florists also add a thin wire inside the stem to keep the head upright.

More general tips are in how to make cut flowers last longer.

Styling gerberas

Gerberas look great on their own in a tall, narrow vase, with the heads at slightly different heights. For a softer look, mix them with roses, greenery or sunflowers. In autumn, orange gerberas fit perfectly into warm colour schemes. See autumn flowers and bouquet ideas.
