How to Arrange a Bouquet in a Vase: A Step-by-Step Guide

A bouquet arrives looking perfect. Ten minutes later it is in a vase at home, and somehow it looks flat, lopsided or too squashed. Good news: arranging flowers is not a secret art. With the right vase and a few simple steps, your bouquet will look just as good as it did in the florist's hands.

At a glance
  • Height: flowers about 1.5 to 2 times the height of the vase.
  • Opening: narrow enough to hold the stems upright.
  • Order: greenery first, then big blooms, then small fillers.
  • Hand-tied bouquets: trim and place them in the vase as they are.

Step 1: choose the right vase

The vase does half the work. Two measurements matter:

  • Height: the flowers should stand about one and a half to two times taller than the vase. Too short a vase and the bouquet looks top-heavy; too tall and the blooms disappear.
  • Opening: the neck should hold the stems loosely together. A wide opening lets them fall outwards.
Vase shapeBest for
Tall cylinderLong-stemmed roses, gladioli, sunflowers
Hourglass (narrow waist)Tulips and loose bouquets that should fan out
Low bowlTable centrepieces, hydrangeas, short stems
Bud vaseSingle stems or two or three small flowers

Step 2: prepare the vase and the stems

  1. Wash the vase with hot, soapy water and rinse it well.
  2. Fill it about two thirds with lukewarm water and add flower food.
  3. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line.
  4. Cut 2 to 3 cm off each stem at an angle with a sharp knife or scissors.

Some flowers have special needs: gerberas like shallow water (see our gerbera guide) and hydrangeas like it deep (see hydrangea care).

Step 3: arrange in layers

  1. Greenery first: place leaves and foliage around the rim, crossing the stems. This builds a natural support grid.
  2. Focal flowers next: put the largest blooms (roses, lilies, sunflowers) in, spaced out and at slightly different heights.
  3. Fillers last: use smaller flowers to fill the gaps and soften the shape.
  4. Turn the vase: check it from all sides, especially if it will stand in the middle of a table.
Florist trick: if your vase opening is too wide, stick a few strips of clear tape across it in a grid. Each stem gets its own square, and the arrangement stays exactly where you put it.

What about hand-tied bouquets?

Most bouquets from a florist are hand-tied: the stems are arranged in a spiral and tied at one point. That spiral is what makes the bouquet stand up by itself. Do not untie it. Simply trim all the stems to the same length below the tie and place the bouquet straight into a vase of the right height.

Styling ideas

  • Split a large bouquet: two or three smaller vases around the room can look more relaxed than one big one.
  • Group by colour: a vase of only pink, or only white, looks calm and modern.
  • Keep the table low: guests should be able to see each other. See table flower ideas.

Keep it fresh

Change the water every one to two days, recut the stems slightly and remove fading flowers. Our full list of tips is in how to make cut flowers last longer. Need flowers to practise with? Browse hand bouquets and mixed flowers.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a rule of thumb, the flowers should be about one and a half to two times the height of the vase, and the opening should hold the stems without squashing them.

Not necessarily. A hand-tied bouquet is designed to stand on its own. Trim the stems, keep the tie and place it straight in the vase.

The vase opening is probably too wide. Use a narrower vase or make a grid of clear tape across the opening.

For most flowers, fill the vase about two thirds full. Gerberas prefer shallow water, while hydrangeas and roses like it deeper.

Yes. Group them by colour or type, put the largest blooms in first and fill the gaps with smaller flowers and greenery.

A jug, a large glass, a clean jar or a bottle all work. Just make sure it is clean and stable.
